West Virginia Sleep Apnea Academic Mentoring Program

WVOSAAMP

West VirginiaThe West Virginia Rural Health Association announced the next West Virginia Obstructive Sleep Apnea Academic Mentoring Partnership (WVOSAAMP) training session on October 1st, 2024, from 8:00am to Noon.

Dr. Patrick J Strollo, Jr, Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and previous President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine stated “Programs like WVOSAAMP are essential for sleep apnea care in the United States and especially for rural areas that have unique challenges to care delivery for sleep apnea. Programs like the WVOSAAMP can help to mitigate adverse health consequences and the economic impact of untreated OSA.” Dr. Robert Stansbury, who is the project lead, hopes the program will equip primary care providers in West Virginia with vital skills for addressing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), particularly for rural communities with limited access to specialty care.

WVOSAAMP Training

Sleep, along with diet and exercise is one of the pillars of health, yet Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) often goes unrecognized or ineffectively treated in West Virginia. FACT: 80% of sleep apnea cases in the United States are undiagnosed. The resulting poor sleep has a broad impact on a variety of health metabolic and cardiopulmonary health. WVOSAAMP was created to train primary care providers in FQHCs and rural community clinics on best practices for screening, diagnosing, and treating obstructive sleep apnea. Participants in this partnership will have access to:

  • Virtual training on basics of OSA care (offered twice a year)
  • Sleep expert mentor consultation and case guidance
  • Quarterly learning collaborative highlighting OSA

Participants will examine the epidemiology of OSA in West Virginia, learn evidence-based management techniques, and explore tailored approaches for diagnosing and treating OSA in high-prevalence disease populations.
